Each year the Wisconsin Agricultural and Life Sciences Alumni Association (WALSAA) recognizes student excellence at UW–Madison. WALSAA is a charitable organization that supports the University of Wisconsin’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences relationships with students, faculty and alumni.
One way that WALSAA helps undergraduates is through their Outstanding Sophomore Award. The WALSAA scholarship committee narrows down many applications, to select the Top 10 Outstanding Sophomores who demonstrate excellence in academics, leadership and service to the University and their community. These students are awarded a financial gift to apply toward tuition in their junior year at UW-Madison.
The UW-Madison Department of Dairy Science is excited to congratulate Abigail Martin and Charles Hamilton, two of the ten recipients of this prestigious honor. As dairy science majors, they distinguish themselves within the department and the campus community as a whole and we commend them on their achievements.
Abigail is a junior dairy science major and is working towards an agricultural business certificate. After college, Abigail plans to work within the dairy industry. Her dream job is to work in agriculture advocacy and promoting dairy to the public. She loves to educate people and she hopes her career will encourage others to become supporters of the dairy industry. Abigail said, “I feel blessed to be a part of a department that is home to so many world-class professors. It is amazing to take a step back and realize we are learning from the best of the best here, both in the classroom and in the lab.”
Charles is also a junior is dairy science. After college, Charles plans to return to his home farm and take over management of the operation. He is excited to use what he has learned in order to manage a herd and be as profitable as possible all while enjoying what he is doing every day. Charles said, my favorite part of the UW-Madison Dairy Science Department is how involved everyone around me is and will be in the Dairy Industry. I love that I am able to learn from current leaders in the industry and grow alongside future leaders in such a world class environment.”
