Participate…and win!

UW-Madison fosters maximum student participation in our competitive teams. On the dairy judging team, every team member is guaranteed a contest to compete in with most students competing in three or four contests over their collegiate judging career.
Competitions are hosted by:
   • Accelerated Genetics
   • The Pennsylvania All-American
   • The Mid-South Fair
   • The North American
   • World Dairy Expo (the national intercollegiate contest)

Team members come to us with varying backgrounds and experience in dairy cattle judging. Typically, freshman students interested in the team will take the Dairy Cattle Selection Class. This class teaches the fundamentals of dairy cow evaluation and judging. It gives all students a comprehensive understanding of evaluation methods, supporting research and industry application of type. Sophomore year is when students start to participate on the team.

In the North American International Dairy Challenge competition, students analyze a commercial farm and present their observations and management recommendations to a panel of five industry professionals. As our awards reflect, UW-Madison Dairy Science students excel in this competitive format, largely due to the high-quality course work and overall educational experience received through our program.

According to employers who recruit at UW-Madison, students who take part in Dairy Judging and other extracurricular activities become better decision-makers, better problem solvers and better communicators than non-participating students.
